Nerano

A picturesque, sleepy fishing village, Nerano is far from the glamour resorts, but is the ideal place to stay to explore the Massa Lubrense national park. This is a paradise for nature lovers, who can choose from more than 100 kilometres of marked pathways. One unforgettable walk is from the village of Torca, down to the coastline of the Marina di Crapolla and the ancient San Pietro church, looking out over Li Galli islands, once the hideaway home of Rudolf Nureyev.

Di qui, nel 1968, partì per Londra il giovanissimo Francesco per seguire i corsi di pittura all’Institute of Contemporary Art. Durante gli anni londinesi incontrò artisti come John Latharn, Howard Hodgkin, Roland Penrose e Andy Warhol. Baia di Ieranto
Prince Charles arrived in a helicopter; mere mortals prefer to walk down to this wild and rugged bay at the Capri end of the Amalfi Coast. Another FAI property, the breathtakingly beautiful bay of Ieranto has a small beach and plenty of rocks for sunbathing and swallow-diving. Bring everything you need, as there are no facilities.
Get there by boat from Marina di Cantone, or via a pretty footpath (45 minutes) from the village of Nerano, where you can stay in a backstreet at the Casale Villarena (081 808 1779; www.casalevillarena.com; apartments from £435 per week), an 18th-century property belonging to the Marchese of Villarena. Designed for weekly stays, it has conventionally furnished rooms, but the small pool, surrounded by olive and citrus trees, is delightful.
